Generator Hookups and Transfer Switches

Ready for hurricane season

Generator Hookups, Interlocks and Transfer Switches

When a storm knocks out power on the Space Coast, a generator keeps your refrigerator, lights, fans and medical equipment running. It has to be connected safely, though. Running cords through windows or backfeeding a dryer outlet can injure utility crews and damage your home.

Grand Electric, Inc. installs code-compliant generator connections, from interlock kits and inlet boxes for portable generators to transfer switches and wiring for permanent standby units. We help you choose which circuits to power and get everything ready before hurricane season.

Common questions

Generator Hookup FAQs

What is the difference between an interlock and a transfer switch?

An interlock is a mechanical device on your main panel that prevents the main breaker and generator breaker from being on at the same time. A transfer switch is a separate device that moves selected circuits to generator power. Both prevent dangerous backfeed.

Can I plug my generator into a dryer outlet?

No. Backfeeding through an outlet can send power onto utility lines and injure line workers, and it can damage your home's wiring. A proper interlock or transfer switch is the safe way to connect.

Which circuits can my generator run?

That depends on the generator's size. We help you choose essential circuits such as the refrigerator, lights, fans, well pump and medical equipment, and size the connection accordingly.

Do you install standby generators?

We handle the electrical side of standby generator installations, including the transfer switch and wiring, and coordinate with the generator supplier.
